5 Fun Facts about Dogs

Dogs have been mans best friend for thousands of years. They walk into our lives and become part of our families. Here are five fun facts that you many not know about your four legged companion.


1.Dogs have three eyelids. They have an upper and lower eyelid, but also a third eyelid, The official name for the third eyelid is nictitating membrane. It is responsible for keeping the eye lubricated and protected. '


2. A dog's nose print is as unique as a human fingerprint. In many countries owners provide nose prints to identify dogs in documents.


3. An adult dog has 42 teeth. 12 incisors, 4 canines, 16 premolars, 10 molars. Many dogs, especially brachycephalic breeds are born with less teeth. Some dogs have extra teeth which are called supernumerary teeth.


4. Dogs can sweat. This is done in a different way than humans. Dogs sweat through their paw pads.


5. Dogs dream just like humans. Dogs can get into REM (rapid eye movement) sleep which is when most dreams happen. Have you ever seen a dog twitching and making weird noises in their sleep? They are probably dreaming about chasing a squirrel. The National Sleep Foundation reports that dogs spend about half of their day sleeping.
