How to Maintain Your Pet’s Oral Health When they Won't Let You Brush

Regular teeth brushing is the most effective way to maintain your pet’s oral health, but what if your dog or cat simply refuses to tolerate it? Fortunately, there are alternative solutions that can help keep your pet's teeth clean and their gums healthy. Just like in humans, oral health in pets is closely linked to their overall well-being.

If your dog or cat doesn’t tolerate having their teeth brushed, you’re not alone. Many pets find the process uncomfortable or even distressing. Thankfully, there are veterinary-approved products that can help maintain your pet’s oral health when brushing is just not an option.

Here are 5 of my favorite products for pets that do not tolerate teeth brushing:

1. Aquadent FR3SH Dental Solution:

Aquadent is a water additive designed to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup in both dogs and cats. This solution contains a unique blend of ingredients, including pomegranate extract, which has antioxidant properties, and Erythritol, known for its plaque-fighting abilities. Simply add the recommended amount of Aquadent to your pet’s drinking water daily to help freshen their breath and support their oral health. It also promotes fresher breath through daily use. Find it here.

2. Greenies Dental Chews:

Greenies provide a convenient alternative that helps reduce plaque and tartar buildup with every chew. The unique texture of Greenies allows for better cleaning as pets chew, naturally helping to scrub away plaque and tartar, which can lead to healthier teeth and gums over time. These treats are highly palatable for dogs and cats. Dog Greenies, Cat Greenies

3. VeggieDent FR3SH Tartar Control Chews

VeggieDent chews are a plant-based option that’s not only good for your pet’s teeth but also their overall health. These chews have a unique Z-shape design that allows for better reach in the mouth, effectively cleaning teeth and reducing plaque and tartar buildup. VeggieDent chews are safe to use with dogs that have food allergies as they are completely composed of vegetables. Check them out here.

4. C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews

C.E.T. Enzymatic Chews are another excellent alternative to brushing. These rawhide chews are designed to provide dual action: a natural antiseptic that works to break down the bacteria that cause plaque, and an abrasive texture that helps clean your pet’s teeth as they chew. These chews are available for only for dogs. Warning: Do NOT leave your dog unattended with these as I have seen many dogs swallow them whole. Check them out here.

5. C.E.T. IntelliDent Cat Bites

Crunchy and flavorful C.E.T. IntelliDent™ Cat Bites work with a cat's natural chewing action to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup.  The great taste and only 3 bites per day makes them easy to give. Compared to other chews they are very low in calories at less than 8 calories per day. These are for cats only and are chicken based, so they cannot be used for cats with food allergies. Check them out here.

While each of these products is effective on its own, using them in combination can provide even better results. For instance, you might use Aquadent daily to maintain oral hygiene, while offering VeggieDent or C.E.T. Chews as a treat a few times a week. This multi-faceted approach can help ensure that your pet’s teeth stay clean, their breath stays fresh, and their overall oral health is maintained.

While this list contains some of the products that I use in practice, there are definitely a lot of other good products on the market. In general, I like to look for products that have the VOHC seal. "The Mission of the Veterinary Oral Health Council is to review products for the VOHC’s standards for effective plaque and tartar control in animals when used as directed. The Council reviews the submitted data to ensure it meets the clinical requirements to receive the Seal of Acceptance. When a product demonstrates dental efficacy, the VOHC Seal of Acceptance is awarded."

Even with the best at-home care, it’s essential to have your pet’s teeth checked regularly by your veterinarian. Routine dental exams and professional cleanings, if needed, can help prevent more serious dental issues and ensure your pet stays healthy.

Remember, oral health is just as important for your pets as it is for you. By incorporating these products into your pet’s daily routine, you can help keep their teeth clean and their gums healthy, ensuring they stay by your side, happy and healthy, for years to come.
