Thanksgiving Day Dog Safe Foods

Updated: Nov 22

Most people know what foods are not good for dogs on Thanksgiving, although I will list them later in this post. However I know there is a large group of people who just want their dog to be able to partake in the festivities.

Foods that you can consider giving to your dog (in small amounts) are:

  • white meat turkey without skin, fat, or bones

  • Apples (can be roasted and core removed), avoid ones from an apple pie with seasonings

  • Sweet potato or regular potatoes, without seasoning or butter

  • Steamed carrots and string beans

  • Pumpkin puree without seasoning

  • For desert consider purchasing dog safe Ice Cream. Pupsicles are a great option as they will keep your dog occupied while you eat as well!

I wouldn't be a good vet if I didn't warn you about the foods not to feed your dogs. Also remember to seal your garbage tightly or put it in a place that your dog cannot get into it. Pancreatitis, which can become lethal, is commonly seen in all veterinary hospitals the days following Thanksgiving. Keep your dogs safe and avoid the following foods:

  • Turkey bones, skin, fat, gravy

  • Mashed potatoes

  • chocolate

  • Anything with onions, garlic, or scallions

  • Anything with raisins or grapes

  • Ham

  • any fatty foods
